PlayStation Plus Tiers Explained: Essential vs Extra vs Premium
PlayStation Plus isn’t one subscription anymore — it’s three, and Sony’s naming doesn’t make the differences obvious. If you’ve seen “Essential,” “Extra,” and “Premium” and aren’t sure which one actually gets you what, here’s the breakdown without the marketing language.

Extra is the tier most people mean when they say they want “more games” without going all the way to Premium.
PlayStation Plus Premium
The full package: Essential and Extra’s benefits, plus game trials, cloud streaming of supported titles, and a deeper catalogue that reaches back into PS3 and PSP classics via streaming. If you want the biggest library and the most flexibility in how you play, Premium is the one — it’s also the most expensive of the three.
Which tier should you actually buy?
Online multiplayer only, on a budget → Essential. Want a big rotating game library without paying for streaming you won’t use → Extra. Want everything, including classics and cloud play → Premium. All three are billed the same way — funded from your PSN wallet balance if you’re paying with a gift card, or by card if you’re on a direct Sony subscription.
